New Technology Provides Non-Invasive Assessment of Metal Pipes
InfraMetrix is now the first firm in the U.S. to offer the Broadband Electromagnetic (BEM) eddy current system, a state-of-the-art investigative tool that provides users with a low-cost, quick turnaround approach to metal pipe investigation for public water and sewer utilities.
An application of electromagnetic or eddy current systems, BEM produces a complete profile of a metal pipe or tank, allowing the investigator to gauge the thickness of the metal and to evaluate changes like graphitization. The frequency-independent BEM system is less affected by background electromagnetic noise, and the operating frequency can be modified to suit pipe material and site conditions. An external BEM assessment is a less costly technique since it does not require taking the pipeline out of service for prolonged periods. Also, because it does not require close contact with the metal, the operator using BEM can scan through coatings, linings and insulation. Internal assessments can be conducted by confined space entry, remote field technology, or pigging devices.
According to Bill DiTullio, President of InfraMetrix, the service life of pressure pipe such as force mains is much less than the service life of gravity sewers and even water mains, creating a dilemma for utility managers in developing accurate asset management programs. “BEM provides data on apparent wall thickness, evidence of internal and external corrosion helping utilities establish a rate of corrosion and, using a mechanistic model, to predict the remaining life of the pipe,” he said. Bill DiTullio Publishes Commentary in UIM
Inframetrix President Bill DiTullio published an article in the latest issue of Underground Infrastructure Management on the technology and management techniques available to asset managers for meeting the increasing challenge of both above and below ground asset maintenance.
Bill said, "The management approach for above and below
ground infrastructure is evolving. New technologies
and software will bring the field to our computers, providing planners, engineers, operators and other decision-
makers real-time access to information that will
improve the performance and condition of our 'public
health' infrastructure and turn the page on our past."

NASSCO Publishes Specification Guidelines
The National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO) has just published Specification Guidelines for zoom camera inspections of gravity sewer manholes (and other structures) and pipelines. These guidelines were peer reviewed by a committee of suppliers, installers, engineers, and system owners. They provide valuable information on the use of this innovative inspection tool used by Canadian utilities for more than 20 years.
"These guidelines are an excellent way to become familiar with zoom inspection technology. By incorporating zoom camera technology into a sewer system management program, utilities will be able to quickly and cost-effectively assess the maintenance, I/I, hydraulic, and structural condition of their gravity sewer system and realize the benefits that it provides in solving overflow and structural condition problems," said InfraMetrix President Bill Di Tullio.

Using Two Technologies Provides Sustained Benefits
A recent Waterworld article highlights work in Fairfax, VA, where the benefits of using two sewer inspection tools, zoom technology and in-line camera technology (CCTV), resulted in substanstial cost savings. Click here to read the full article.
InfraMetrix President Bill DiTullio explained, “Sanitary and storm sewer utilities are addressing maintenance and structural deficiencies much quicker and for significantly less cost by performing a preliminary condition assessment using truck mounted zoom cameras together with CCTV.
"Manholes and pipelines that require immediate attention are identified and pipelines that require less immediate cleaning and in-line inspection are prioritized resulting in large time and cost savings. These savings then free up inspection dollars for mitigating defects."

County Awards InfraMetrix Sewer Assessment Contract
To give Hillsborough County, FL a real-time
assessment of its 1,300 miles of sanitary sewer infrastructure,
County officials signed InfraMetrix to an $8.7 million
contract this month.
The
assessment will be conducted employing InfraMetrix’s
unique CUES/IMX zoom camera, which will produce a comprehensive
understanding of the physical characteristics and condition
of all of the County’s sewer assets. “…
Our CUES/IMX camera sees farther than hand-held pole
cameras, an essential requirement for improving system
management and performance,” commented InfraMetrix
President Bill Di Tullio.
Specifically,
the camera’s lens will be focused on the structural
conditions of manholes, and gravity sewers with the
greatest risk of hydraulic deficiencies or structural
failure. That will proactively avoid future sewer back-ups
or overflows for the county’s 135,000 service
customers.

InfraMetrix
and CUES, Inc. Announce New Alliance and Technology
InfraMetrix, LLC and CUES, Inc. have teamed
to develop new products and services for storm water
and wastewater collection system inventory and diagnosis.
The first technology developed by the partnership is
the CUES-IMX Camera. Its zoom technology helps utilities
get a complete picture of pipe conditions efficiently
and cost-effectively, so they can identify and quickly
address sewer system needs and comply with CMOM and
GASB-34 requirements.
Wastewater utilities can quickly locate maintenance
and structural defects that may cause sewer overflows.
“With information on the actual condition of collection
systems, a utility is able to implement prioritized
cleaning and CCTV camera inspection, saving time and
money,” says Sandy Milley, president of CUES.
InfraMetrix president Bill Di Tullio says the alliance
will build on the expertise of both firms. “CUES
has a long-standing reputation for innovation and excellence
in pipeline inspection and rehabilitation technology.
By pairing their expertise with InfraMetrix’s
unique infrastructure diagnostic services, we can help
utilities make intelligent choices and prioritize investment
decisions with comprehensive inventories and assessments.”

InfraMetrix Responds to USEPA Report on Impacts
and Control of CSOs and SSOs
In
an August 26, 2004 report to Congress, USEPA reported
that despite some progress, discharges
from municipal wastewater systems —
both combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and sanitary sewer
overflows (SSOs) — continue to pose a threat to
public health and the environment. USEPA outlined
opportunities to further control sewer overflows and
meet Clean Water Act objectives, including strategies
such as inspection programs and sewer flushing to clear
debris and other obstructions.
In
response, InfraMetrix president
Bill Di Tullio said in a press release, "Our zoom
camera has proven to be a crucial element for collection
systems that experience overflows. It provides a quick
and cost-effective sewer inspection...helping utilities
invest dollars in the right place for cleaning, rehabilitation
and repairs, improving the health and welfare of communities."
