CUES-IMX Camera Provides Clear Picture for Storm Water Drainage
Authorities in Jefferson County, Alabama knew they had a storm water drainage problem but they needed to map and assess its extent. Under a contract with Strada Professional Services, a minority-owned engineering firm, InfraMetrix was called in to study a sampling, about one percent, of the County’s catch basins and pipelines.
In nine days InfraMetrix, using its truck-mounted CUES-IMX zoom camera, investigated 209 pipe sections and 176 catch basins. The company obtained detailed visual images with CUES-IMX video equipment, while it simultaneously developed GIS mapping of each location. The final analysis showed that 57 percent of the County’s inspected catch basins and 25 percent of its inspected pipelines needs cleaning. About 30 percent of the assessed infrastructure requires immediate action.
The County is currently looking to assess its entire storm water drainage system, and InfraMetrix is well positioned to help. “It would have taken at least a month to complete the same investigation with conventional, inline closed circuit TV,” observed Ron Thompson (BIR) a field operations manager for InfraMetrix, “and they wouldn’t have been able to develop maps at the same time.”
